Gainesville Fire Rescue is proud to recommend Lieutenant Don G. Campbell, Jr.
Lt. Campbell was the lead officer on a rescue in January 2014 when his company, Tower 1, had to rapidly remove a worker who had been buried by collapsed dirt in southeast Gainesville. During the rescue, both the patient and the crew were in imminent danger from an overhang of dirt that was cracked loose from the first collapse. Due to the severity of the patient’s injuries, Lt. Campbell directed his crew to focus on his safe removal rather than taking time to reinforce the overhang as they would normally do during a technical rescue of this type. Lt. Campbell and his crew were awarded GFR’s Medal of Valor which is only given for department members who, at great personal risk, conducted life-saving operations.
Lt. Campbell received multiple nominations for his leadership beyond this specific incident from both his superiors and subordinates for GFR’s annual awards program and, after review by the department’s awards committee, Lt. Campbell was also awarded as GFR’s Company Officer of the Year on April 23, 2015.
